As military men and women come home and retire, they are probably looking for the best place to settle down and raise a family. This place should include support in terms of help finding a job, affordable housing, and health support for all military retirees. I mean they did just serve our country by putting their lives on the line for our freedom so it is the least we can do, right?

The question becomes, where is the best place for military retirees to settle down in 2020? Is it Iowa? Unfortunately, the answer to that question is... no. According to WalletHub, Iowa has been ranked at the 9th worst state for military retirees in 2020. They have compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia with 29 key factors that include affordable housing, number of homeless veterans, accessibility to the job market and other factors to determine where each state is ranked.

Iowa had the following ranks for certain key factors:

  • 38th- Veteran Job Opportunities
  • 30th- Number of VA Facilities per Number of Veterans
  • 43rd- Number of VA Benefits-Administration Facilities per Number of Veterans

However, Iowa also landed in the top 5 for "lowest percentage of homeless veterans" and was number 1 for "most affordable housing." Part of the reason behind these low rankings has been attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic tanking the job market and leading to other devastation.
