An Iowa teen got a very unfortunate surprise when he got to work at his job at Subway Wednesday afternoon.

18-year-old Connor Kernes showed up for his shift at the Subway location at 3701 East 14th Street in Des Moines on Wednesday, April 7 at around 3:30 p.m. According to KCCI, when he walked into the store, another young man was apparently waiting for him. Things escalated very quickly.

Des Moines Police Department Sgt. Paul Parizek told KCCI,

When we reviewed the video, it looked like the suspect was already in the store … maybe getting ready to order some food. The victim walked in, there was a real brief instance where they looked like maybe they exchanged a few words and then he was stabbed. (It was) just that sudden.

The teen who is accused of stabbing Kernes in the chest then ran to a nearby business. A citizen who witnessed the stabbing followed him and according to Parizek, "kinda got him cornered in there a little bit. They did a great job of not putting themselves in too much danger but also being in a position to give us good information."

Des Moines police soon arrived on the scene and arrested 16-year-old Brian M. Schnathorst. He's been charged with Attempted Murder and Willful Injury. Authorities haven't been able to determine what led to the stabbing but say the two teens do know one another. We Are Iowa reported Thursday that Kernes was still hospitalized. The investigation continues.
