It's a hot-button topic for sure. The growing influx of undocumented (illegal as some call them) immigrants into the United States. Texas seems to be ground zero for their entrance as the Biden administration has shut down the work started on his predecessor's "border wall".

The above Tweet from KCRG's Beth Malicki goes with a story they put out after a press release on Thursday saying that Governor Kim Reynolds will be deploying state patrol officers from Iowa to the southern border of the United States.

The move comes in response to a joint request from Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Doug Ducey of Arizona. Florida, Nebraska, and Idaho have also responded to this request to all 50 states, sent out June 10, formally called the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. It is said that the Governors requesting help will be required to financially reimburse those states who provide it.

Reynolds said:

My first responsibility is to the health and safety of Iowans and the humanitarian crisis at our nation’s southern border is affecting all 50 states

She noted an "unsustainable rise" in drugs, human trafficking, and violent crime coming into the United States are why Iowa has no choice but to act. U.S. Customs and Border Protection report that border encounters are also at a 20-year high.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette says the deployment of officers is set to last two weeks, and the Iowa State Patrol has 360 sworn staff with 267 solely assigned to road duty. It's worth noting Iowa already has 24 National Guard troops conducting missions in the area.
