Iowa Seeing Huge Demand for Blackout License Plates

It was two summers ago that Iowans got to vote for the new state license plate at the Iowa State Fair. The City/Country Reboot (below) was the winner, but most people in the Hawkeye State weren't real passionate about the new design.

You certainly can't say that about the Blackout plate (at top). These things are HOT SELLERS. So much so that they're selling out. Yesterday afternoon, the Johnson County Treasurer's Office announced, via a press release, they had none left. In the release, they said

due to the high demand of the new license plates, they are unable to keep up with production. The Iowa DOT does not have a timeline for when more license plates will be available and sent to the Johnson County Treasurer's Office.

This morning, Linn County made the same announcement. Linn County, however, is expecting a new shipment on September 25.

KCCI reports Polk County has also run dry on their supply. They sold 1,000 in six days in Des Moines after they became available at county Treasurer's Offices on September 3. Like Johnson County, they have no idea when they'll receive more.

The Blackout plates prove again that sometimes simple is better. Besides, they awfully cool.
