Iowa Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery Signs Contract Extension

Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery isn't going anywhere. The University of Iowa announced this afternoon that he's signed an extension to his current contract.

McCaffery, who's in his 11th year with the Hawkeyes, has now signed a four-year extension, meaning he's under contract to be the head man in Iowa City through the 2027-28 season.

According to the University of Iowa Sports Information Department, McCaffery's base salary will not increase in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. After each of the next two years, he will receive a longevity bonus. The last five years of the contract, beginning in 2023-24, he'll receive a pay increase each year. If any season is abbreviated by 25 percent or more, McCaffery's base salary will be cut by 10 percent.

In a media release, McCaffery said,

I am grateful to Gary Barta and President Bruce Harreld for their continued support. It truly is an honor to represent the University of Iowa and coach the tremendous young men in our program. I am proud of what our team accomplished during the regular season, and we are eager to compete for a national championship this month.

University of Iowa Director of Athletics Gary Barta announced he planned to extend McCaffery's contract a year ago, but discussions were put on hold due to the pandemic.

Fran McCaffery's record at Iowa is 215-151. His career coaching record stands at 466-328. Iowa is ranked 8th in the final AP poll of the regular season, after losing to Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Saturday. Iowa, the 2nd seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, is 21-8 this season. Iowa plays Grand Canyon (17-6) Saturday afternoon at 5:25 p.m. Iowa time. The game will be televised by TBS.

Coach McCaffery has brought the Iowa men's basketball program to levels not seen since the 1980s. This year's team is seeded #2 in the NCAA Tournament, with 1987 being the only other year it's happened in school history. Fran is one of the most demonstrative coaches on the college sideline and he always fights for his team, and his players. I wouldn't want it any other way. Below are the many faces of Fran McCaffery.
