Two Iowa Men Face Charges From Drag Racing Crash That Killed One

A pair of Iowa men have been charged after a drag racing accident that left one man dead.

WHO-TV reports that on October 19, 2021, three men were riding motorcycles and drag racing on Highway 28 in Des Moines when one of them wrecked, near the red marker below, in the 6500 block of Highway 28.

37-year-old Kyle Houge of Des Moines was northbound on Highway 28 when Hogue lost control and crashed his motorcycle. KCRG reports he hit the median. Hogue (below) was taken to a Des Moines hospital where he died from his injuries.

Authorities were able to determine that Hogue was drag racing Brady Clausi (left at top) and Michael Crabb (right at top), both of Des Moines. The Muscatine Journal says court documents indicate Clausi told police he was traveling at 187 miles per hour when Hogue lost control. Crabb told police investigators his motorcycle was going 160 mph.

On January 6, 2022, Crabb and Clausi were both charged with vehicular homicide by drag racing and vehicular homicide by driving recklessly. Both charges are felonies.

Clausi, 23, was already in the Polk County Jail on another charge. He remains in custody.

The Des Moines Register says Crabb, 35, was arrested Sunday, January 23. He has since posted bond and been released.

While the October incident happened far from downtown Des Moines, residents of downtown Des Moines went to the city council in March of 2021 with concerns about drag racing in the downtown area. Chris Wenell, who lives in downtown Des Moines, spoke to the City Council at a meeting. According to KCCI, he said, "Something bad is going to happen. Somebody is going to get killed down here."
