Iowa Is In the Christmas Spirit, Despite 2020
Are you feeling it yet? I am talking about the "Christmas spirit". We're just nine days away and this year more than ever, it seems like we're all planted firmly in either having it or most definitely not. There is no between, except there is, because that's pretty much where Iowa is sitting in a new report by CenturyLink.
They used an interesting set of "key metrics" to determine their findings.
- Google searches for Christmas movies and gingerbread houses
- Online shopping (via Google Shopping Trends) for wrapping paper, Christmas cards, Christmas ornaments, and “Elf on a Shelf”
- Christmas music streams
- Tweets about Christmas
- Number of Christmas tree farms per capita
- Charitable giving in the last documented tax year, as defined by the IRS
The end result of their calculations had Iowa at 29th among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. for Christmas spirit.
As to who had the most Christmas spirit, the Top 5 were Utah, Idaho, Wisconsin and North and South Carolina.
At the bottom of the list? Colorado, New Mexico, Florida, Hawaii and D.C.
Half the states in the top tier of "Christmas spirit" on the list have brutal winters, which makes sense, while in Florida and Hawaii, for example, tropical weather prevails most of the time.
You can see CenturyLink's (cute) map and the rest of their findings on who has the most and least Christmas spirit below.
