Iowa has a Hero in its Midst, Please Say His Name
When I was in the fire department I joined because I wanted to ride the ambulance and help my community in that way. Emergency 51 sparked my interest and I never looked back. I saw a lot of stuff and some of it I wish I hadn't. Shootings were one of those things.
Sometimes it was an accident and others not. I've shared before that our ambulance was hit by random gunfire and it's very unnerving. I would like to think I could but I'm not sure I could face an active shooter but that's exactly what Dan Marburger did.
What are the details?
On January 4, 2024, Dylan Butler entered Perry High School just after 7:30 and began to shoot. Principal Marburger and an 11-year-old student lost their lives on that day. Six other staffers were also injured. The 17-year-old Butler also died on that day of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It will be the last time I reference that coward by name,
Dan Marburger did what I'm not sure I could do. The principal of Perry High School since 1995. He faced an active shooter and according to the report, not only did he draw attention away from students and to himself which saved lives but he did it multiple times.
He talked to the shooter and called him by name, each time he engaged the shooter he gave students the chance to escape.
The report released today goes on to detail how Principal Marburger could have escaped with his life but chose to remain behind so others would be safe. Please say his name today so we can remember a true hero.
