Iowa Drive-In Theaters Set to Open Next Month
Another season of entertaining families is just around the corner at Iowa's four drive-in theaters, three of which are fairly close to Cedar Rapids. Here's where you can find them and when they're opening!
Blue Grass Drive-In
Located at 774 West Mayne St. in Blue Grass, it's about a 75-minute trip from Cedar Rapids to the Blue Grass Drive-in. I checked in with them and found out they're scheduled to open for the season on April 19. Their fifth year in business will feature the debut of a third screen! According to their website, they're open seven days a week from late May to early August.
Opening weekend movies are not yet confirmed, but they say they'll be showing 'Avengers: Endgame,' beginning the weekend of April 26.
Double Feature Cost: $9 (13 & up); $4 (4-12); Free (3 & under)
61 Drive In Theatre
Located at 1228 Highway 61 in Delmar, it's also about a 75-minute drive from Cedar Rapids. They tell me they're tentatively scheduled to open for the season on Friday, April 26. Open seven nights a week during the summer.
Look for Avengers: Endgame, Aladdin, and Pets 2 among the movies they'll be showing this year. Specific dates are not confirmed at this time.
Double Feature Cost: $8 (13 & up); $5 (5-12); Free (4 & under)
Valle Drive-In
It's the oldest drive-in in Iowa, having opened in 1948. Located at 4074 Highway F48 West in Newton, it's a 90-minute drive from Cedar Rapids. I reached out to them and they report they'll open for the season Friday, April 5, "as long as the weather permits."
Double Feature Cost: $8 (12 & up); $5 (5-11); Free (4 & under)
Superior 71 Drive In
Located at 1482 300th Ave. in Spirit Lake, Superior 71 is the only drive-in in western Iowa. I left them a message about an opening date for the season, but haven't heard back yet.
Double Feature Cost: $8 (13 & up); $4 (5-12); Free (4 & under)
Get out and enjoy a drive-in movie at one of these Iowa spots this year and take a trip back in time.
