Iowa DNR Looking For Volunteers To Study Bats

If you're looking for some part-time work and love the outdoors, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources might have the perfect job for you. How would you like to study bats? Yes, bats those cute, adorable flying rats that inhabit the night sky. It's all part of an ongoing study by the DNR.

Volunteers are being sought to help conduct the study in Dubuque, Lucas, Jackson, Warren, and Clayton counties. Participants would work in teams of two on one night in both June and July for around two and a half hours. A training session in May is also required. DNR officials estimate that the total time committed would be around 10 hours.

So what would you be doing out there with all the bats? The study is called the Acoustic Monitoring Survey for Bats. It involves a microphone attached to a vehicle, which is then attached to bat detecting equipment inside the vehicle. One person drives slowly, while the other gives directions on a predetermined 30-mile route and monitors the equipment.
