Illinois Ranks As One Of Most Romantic States, Iowa Not So Much
It's Valentine's week.
Love can make you happy, it can also make you vomit, and it's those two approaches that helped determine how 'romantic' each state is.
Bookies ranked the 'Most Romantic States' based off of Google Trends from the last 5 years. Specifically, which states were searching 'Valentine's Day' the most in the 30 days leading up to it.
From there, each state got a 1 to a 100 based on search volume. The higher the score, the more "romantic" the state.
Illinois Is Doing Fine
Out of 50 states taken into consideration, Illinois ranked as the 6th Most Romantic State. Solid.
They had a score of 92 in 2024, their highest in the last few years.
Iowa Might Have Killed Romance
On the other side of the river (and of the romantic divide), there's Iowa. Iowa ranked as the 38th Most Romantic State. Yikes.
In 2024, Iowa had a score of 68, their lowest in the last few years. Iowa's most romantic year (according to the Google stats) was 2021, with a score of 80. Which was just about on par with Illinois that year.
So while the search for love and Valentines may be going up in Illinois, it seems to be tanking in Iowa. To be fair, it could be worse. Wisconsin is ranked as the 44th Most Romantic State. That could be why it didn't work out with my Wisconsinite ex.
The most romantic state is West Virginia, while coming in dead last is Oregon. Most of the top few states (besides Illinois) are in the eastern part of the U.S.
