Summer's coming and local public pools are closing because of COVID-19, so what is one to do if they need to cool off? It's no surprise that home pool sales are on the rise. At this point, it's probably seeing a bigger uptick than most businesses, in Dubuque and elsewhere.

Patrick Tobin is an area pool store owner and spoke to KCRG about the surge his store is seeing from people desperate to take a dip.

"The phone has been ringing off the hook for pools above ground, in-ground, and tubs", said Tobin.

As of Tuesday, May 26, Tobin said his store was down to one unit left on the showroom floor as their manufacturers and vendors work seven days a week to meet demand.

And the wait is long, up to five weeks to get your above ground backyard oasis installed, and maybe up to three months for in-ground installation.

Right now, Tobin says customers are spending $3,700-$60,000 for a pool.

MarketWatch reported that the 25 biggest pool-builders nationally are seeing much higher demand this Spring than last, and in fact, it's a huge revival for the home pool industry that at one point was almost on the verge of extinction, according to Sabeena Hickman, the president and CEO of the Pool and Hut Tub Alliance .

Even if you wanted to go cheaper and get a high-end inflatable pool for $20-$40 from online retailers or big box stores, few people are regretting the investment right now.

It's a staycation many are buying into big-time right now but what will it mean for those public pools when they are able to reopen? Time will tell as hopefully there will soon be a safer time to return.
