The national goal of a net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 is going to take the use of both electric cars and increased production of renewable fuels such as ethanol, Renewable Fuels Association President and CEO Geoff Cooper told the House Agriculture Committee in a hearing yesterday.

In his testimony to the House Committee, Cooper said that agriculture can offer an effective and immediate solution for reducing carbon emissions across all segments in the transportation sector.

That’s where agriculture comes in. Through the increased production and use of low-carbon renewable fuels like ethanol, the U.S. agriculture sector offers an effective and immediate solution for further reducing carbon emissions from liquid fuels across all segments of the transportation sector.

Iowa Corn Growers

Ethanol is also on the priority list for the Iowa Corn Growers Association said Lance Lillibrigge, President of the Iowa Corn Growers Association

We want to make sure that we have seen increased funding for infrastructure and a cost-share program to support our Iowa biofuels industry.

The group is also wanting there to be a federal push on ethanol.

And, again, ethanol is so important, you know, across the whole country. It's a cleaner-burning fuel and it's available. We have the capacity to expand that ethanol market like nobody's business.

Today’s ethanol already reduces greenhouse gas by roughly half when compared to gasoline.

Iowa Ethanol

Iowa leads the country in ethanol production by creating around 30 percent of the country’s ethanol. Iowa produces more than 4.1 billion gallons of ethanol a year; using more than 1.3 billion bushels of corn.
