Granger Smith and his wife, Amber, have certainly been carrying the burden of difficult times this year, after losing their youngest child to a drowning accident at their home in June. However, the couple can still step away from things and celebrate what is good in their lives, as evidenced by a post Amber shared on Instagram Wednesday (Sept. 4).

That day happened to be Granger's 40th birthday, and the pair apparently celebrated the milestone in the city where they were engaged — across the pond from the United States.

"40 years ago today, this man was brought from Heaven to this Earth. A little over 10 years ago, God brought him to me, and exactly 10 years ago, he proposed in York, England," Amber explains. "Today, in that same spot, we celebrate him, our love and our life we’ve built together. We’ve had so much love, so much laughter, so much adventure and so many tears, both joyful and devastating.

"He’s the best husband and father I could have ever hoped for, he makes me better, and I’m so grateful we get to do this life together. In sickness, in health, for better for worse. Happy birthday, my love. We love you past the stars."

The couple's oldest child, a daughter, is named London, so perhaps it comes as no surprise that the U.K. is so important to the pair.

The Smiths are celebrating their late son River's legacy by raising money in his name via sales of a tribute T-shirt. They presented a check for $218,791 to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin in June. The tribute T-shirts are sold out at the moment, but a new one is in the works for fall to raise more money in his memory. Until then, donate directly to Dell Children's here.
