An event that debuted in Cedar Rapids in 2019 is finally able to return this summer. It will bring former Major League Baseball stars and other celebrities to Cedar Rapids for a game and a free baseball/softball camp for kids.

The first Perfect Game Cares Celebrity Softball Game was held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids in July 2019. It featured Hall of Fame closer Trevor Hoffman, Bo Jackson, Ryan Sweeney, Luis Gonzalez, Greg Vaughn, Tom "Flash" Gordon, and other former Major League Baseball players. Former Hawkeye football star Tim Dwight played in the game, along with Dedric Ward, Adrian Arrington, and Jay Hilgenberg. There were two former Miss Iowa's and a Victoria Secret Supermodel (Alanna Arrington). You can see photos from that first game at the bottom of this story.

After the pandemic wiped it out the last three years, the charity game is back in 2023 and promises to be even better than the inaugural event.

The PG Cares Foundation Celebrity Softball Game and Grow the Game Youth Baseball/Softball camp will both be held on Saturday, July 29. The free camp for kids 12 and under will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on PG Cares Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, home of the Cedar Rapids Kernels. There will also be a youth home run derby with the finals held prior to the celebrity softball game. The camp will be able to accommodate more than 500 kids. Each child who takes part will get a free ticket for the celebrity game. Registration has not yet opened.

The celebrity game happens at 7 p.m. on July 29 and will be followed by fireworks. Proceeds from the game will go to the PG Cares Foundation's Grow the Game Fund. It "aims to remove barriers that stand between children from underserved communities, including those in Iowa, and their chance to fall in love with the sports of baseball and softball."

The announcement of the celebrities taking part in this year's game will happen on Monday, May 1. We'll let you know who's coming and about tickets at that time.
