The Oscars are this Sunday night.  A night that Hollywood honors the best in motion picture.  I am a HUGE movie fan, and I enjoy watching the Academy Awards.  But sometimes you have to sit back and wonder what were they thinking!  How did THAT film win, but THIS film didn't?  History has a way of making some of Oscar's flubs look even more astounding.  Here are five fantastic films, some of them are among my all time favorites, that did NOT win Best Picture.

1959, North By Northwest - Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece is ranked by IMDB at #25 of ALL TIME!  It also has a 100% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

1975, Jaws - The Steven Speilberg film about a great white shark is among the best horror movies of all time, and despite problems with the shark itself, is wonderfully shot.  One of Speilberg's best, and one of my favorite movies of all time.

1976, Taxi Driver - Perhaps no director has been snubbed more by the Oscars than Martin Scorsese.  This masterpiece starring Robert DeNiro wasn't even nominated!

1994, The Shawshank Redemption - A box office disappointment, Shawshank has gone on to become a cult favorite of many, including myself.  It had 7 nominations on Oscar night, but did not win a single one.

1997, Good Will Hunting - This film is famous for the two wins it DID get.  The late Robin Williams for best supporting actor, and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for best original screenplay.  But it lost out on Best Picture to some movie about a boat that hits an iceberg.
