If you've been to a show at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, you know that it's one of the older venues in Eastern Iowa. Plans for a renovation project have been in the works for some time, and now those plans will go to the public for a vote.

This Monday, the Dubuque City Council voted 6-1 in favor of a September special ballot to be brought to the public. There was some discussion of having the vote come earlier in the year, say March. But some were concerned that it would take longer to educate the public on the overall cost of the project.

Councilmember Brad Cavanagh said that rushing the vote would not allow the type of discussion needed about something with this big of a price tag. He also noted how important the project is to the entire Dubuque community.

The renovation plan for the Five Flags Center and surrounding buildings is estimated to cost nearly $74 million.
