First MLB Game To Be Played At Field Of Dreams
The movie 'Field of Dreams' holds a special place in my heart. It is also a cool place to visit too. The field near Dyersville remains a mecca to baseball fans from around the world. It hosts numerous events including a celebrity softball game each year that features some big-time MLB Hall of Famers! But there has never been an actual MLB game played on the field. That is about to change.
Since the movie depicts Shoeless Joe Jackson, the disgraced Chicago White Sox player who was banned after being convicted of throwing a World Series, it only seems appropriate that the White Sox be one of the teams to play the first MLB game at the hallowed field. The team made the announcement this morning on their Facebook page.
A temporary 8,000 seat stadium will be built where the film was shot in 1989. The dimensions of the field have not been revealed. Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, one year to the day before the game which will be played Thursday, August 13, 2020. It will be a home game for the Chicago White Sox. The two teams will have the following day off and then finish their three-game series that weekend (Saturday and Sunday) in Chicago.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN,
As a sport that is proud of its history linking generations, Major League Baseball is excited to bring a regular-season game to the site of Field of Dreams. We look forward to celebrating the movie's enduring message of how baseball brings people together at this special cornfield in Iowa.
There should be plenty of baseballs flying into the corn next August when the White Sox and Yankees play at The Field of Dreams! This will be a hot ticket and a can't miss for true baseball fans!
'If you build it, he will come....."
