Iowa High School Volleyball Match will be Played Outdoors
There have been some historic outdoor sporting events in recent years here in the Midwest. You had the 'Crossover at Kinnick' event starring the Iowa women's basketball team. It was the largest outdoor women's basketball game ever played. Then there was the volleyball match between Nebraska and Omaha last August. A crowd of over 92,000 packed Memorial Stadium in Lincoln to become the largest crowd to ever watch a women's sporting event.
Now, it is high school volleyball's turn. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that West Delaware and Mt. Vernon have agreed to move their September 17th match outdoors. It is believed to be the first-ever event of its kind in Iowa high school sports history. The site will be Brown Field in Manchester, Iowa.
The idea reportedly started with West Delaware athletic director Matt Weis. The Gazette reports that he reached out to coaches and then ran his plan by the Iowa Girl's High School Athletic Union. He stated that they were "all about it." It will be a battle between two of the top volleyball programs in the state. Mt. Vernon was the class 3A runners-up last year and have four all-staters on their roster. West Delaware is a 14-time state qualifier.
According to the Gazette, the match will be played on one of the state tournament courts currently in storage at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The match will be moved indoors if the weather doesn't cooperate.
