Federal Flood Money is Coming to Cedar Rapids

A breakthrough has come for Cedar Rapids in the way of federal flood protection funding.

The Gazette reports that the Army Corps of Engineers has released $117 million in needed funding. The announcement came via news release from Iowa senator Joni Ernst.

Cedar Rapids has been working on a $750 million (accounting for inflation) flood-protection system consisting of walls, levees gates and pump stations to protect 7.5 miles of the east and west side of the Cedar River.

The job will take time and money to finish, as evidenced by the decade it's already taken to get this money since the flood of 2008. But, this next step is crucial and will be a big part of the process toward finishing much-needed flood protection the city has been waiting for.
