A father and his 8-year-old son have died after their vehicle broke through the ice Sunday on a northwest Iowa lake. Two other children were rescued from the scene.

Buena Vista County Sheriff's officials say the family traveled to the Storm Lake area to attend a local indoor waterpark Sunday afternoon. Investigators say they still do not know why the man decided to drive to the nearby lake after leaving the park. The car was seen driving slowly before it became submerged in freezing water more than a quarter mile from the shore.

Rescuers found the wet children on the ice, while the father was in the water. Rescuers used sleds to get the family safely to shore. The man and his son were both pronounced dead at a local hospital. The other children were girls ages 9 and 5. They were flown to a South Dakota hospital. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
