The early winter weather has caught us all by surprise, and few people are actually ready for it. That includes the homeless population in Linn County. Starting on Friday, they'll have a warm place to seek shelter from the winter weather.

An emergency overflow shelter will open on Friday, November 15th at 6 p.m. The shelter is Filmore Building at 520 11th street Northwest in Cedar Rapids. Linn County's Child and Youth Development Services will be moving to another location to make room for the shelter. Linn County owns the building but will contract services to Willis Dady Homeless Services.

Anyone wishing to donate supplies to the new shelter can bring packed food items like tuna and granola bars to Willis Dady between 6 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. The shelter is also collecting clean blankets, coats, hats, scarves, and gloves.

The new shelter will be open and staffed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. every day through February 15th.
