About Dutch Bros Coffee

According to the company's website, Dutch Bros Coffee got its start back in 1992 Grants Pass, Oregon. Founders Dane and Travis Boersma left their jobs in the dairy industry to set up a pushcart and sell coffee near the railroad tracks. In 2000, the first franchise location opened, and the company has continued to grow and improve in the years since.

Dutch Bros Coffee sells more than just coffee. They have their own line of energy drinks, smoothies, sparkling soda, matcha, iced tea, lemonade, shakes and more. They also have seasonal beverages to choose from. Some of the beverages on the 'Fan Favorites' section of the menu include Caramelizer (espresso, caramel, & chocolate milk), Cocomo (espresso, coconut, & chocolate milk), Kicker (espresso & Irish cream breve), and Golden Eagle (espresso, caramel & vanilla breve, & caramel drizzle), the most popular item on the menu.

The beverages are just one aspect of Dutch Bros Coffee that keeps customers coming back. The Register reports that the company's "fun, rebellious, and inclusive culture" is another big draw. The article reads:

"The high-energy lifestyle brand sets itself apart from Starbucks’ café culture with the convenience of a drive-thru, upbeat music, and energetic staff known as 'broistas.'

It’s not uncommon for broistas to remember regulars’ names and stories, creating a loyal fanbase. Fans love it so much that they often refer to themselves as the Dutch Mafia."

Iowa's First Location

The very first Dutch Bros Coffee is set to take over a former Fazoli’s location at 4800 SE 14th Street in Des Moines. According to a story from We Are Iowa, they plan to demolish the existing building and build a 986-square-foot shop with a drive-thru. There will be no indoor dining available. The official site plan was submitted to the city of Des Moines on September 30th.

Future Expansion

Looking at the map on their website, it looks like the Midwest and East Coast are the only portions of the country that don't have Dutch Bros Coffee yet. Nebraska, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Michigan are the other Midwest states that don't have any locations... for now! The company is continuing to grow, with the Register reporting that they hope to open around 1,000 more stores by 2029. We'll have to wait and see if any Eastern Iowa cities are on the list!
