Cedar Rapids has had at least four drive-in theaters over the years, but these days you have to drive a little further in Iowa to enjoy a movie out the windshield of your vehicle.

Once upon a time, Cedar Rapids had all of these drive-ins:

  • Twin Drive-In, on 6th Street SW, had screens facing in opposite directions.
  • Twix Town Drive-In off Collins Road NE where Michael's is now located.
  • Collins Road Drive-Inn off 51st St NE where Pat McGrath Chevyland is today.
  • There was also one on 16th Ave SW long ago, but we can't find anyone who remembers the name. Do you?

Those are the Cedar Rapids drive-ins we remember. Did we forget any?

Today, there are still five drive-in theaters operating in Iowa:

  1. The closest to Cedar Rapids is just over an hour away in Grandview, Iowa. The Grand View Drive-In Theater first opened its doors in 2007 and will open later this spring.
  2. About 75-minutes away in Delmar, a few miles from Maquoketa, is the 61 Drive-In Theater. It reopens in April.
  3. About the same distance away is the Blue Grass Drive-In Theater in, you guessed it, Bluegrass, Iowa. They showed "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool" last weekend, but haven't announced a full-on opening for 2016 yet.
  4. Heading to Central Iowa? Newton is where you'll find the Valle Drive-In. There's some serious history here. The Times-Republican says the Valle is Iowa's oldest drive-in, having first opened in 1948. It's Iowa's oldest  It opens for the 2016 season this weekend, with "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Deadpool."
  5. The only drive-in in western Iowa is located in Spirit Lake. The Superior 71 Drive-In Theater also showed the new Batman versus Superman movie this past weekend.

Anybody else up for a road trip?
