Earlier this week, the news circulated that a rash of catalytic converter thefts was being reported in recent months in Cedar Rapids, asking car owners to be aware.

Via a press release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, they have just released video footage of a potential suspect involved in two recent thefts of catalytic converters in the area. One on the evening of Sunday, January 31, or early Monday, February 1 in Northeast Cedar Rapids, and another incident Monday evening, around 11 p.m. in southwest Cedar Rapids. The media release states:

Anyone with information about this incident and who can identify the suspect or suspect vehicle is encouraged to contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department at (319) 286-5491 and reference case #2021-01806. Information can also be submitted to Linn County Crime Stoppers

by calling 1-800-CS-CRIME (272-7463) or texting CRIMES (274637) and in the message/subject, type 5227 and your tip. You can continue to trade information with an investigator. Text STOP to opt out at any time. Please reference case #2021-01806.

 

A further disclaimer stated: "any arrest information included above is based on the legal conclusion that, as with any criminal case, a charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."

The Cedar Rapids police appear to be on the case in this very unusual recent criminal phenomenon, and we will keep you posted as their search for answers and culprits progresses.
