Right now, we're approaching our third holiday in the midst of social distancing. St. Patrick's Day was canceled, Easter celebrations were stripped down to the bare minimum, and now Mother's Day is facing a similar fate.

In our family, we typically celebrate Mother's Day with a big barbecue that includes my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. This year, that obviously won't be happening. I'm sure it's hard on everyone in the family that we can't get together like we used to, but it's especially difficult for my grandma. She hasn't been allowed to leave her house in weeks or see any of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren. I haven't seen her since Christmas! That's why I wanted to do something special for her this year.

My grandma LOVES being on the radio. We've put her on the air many times and she's always hilarious. But this time, things were different. We surprised her with something that left her nearly speechless (which is not an easy task!).

I asked my mom and her two sisters to write a short message to my grandma, expressing their love for her. My mom joined us on the air to read her letter, which was the longest of the bunch. Then, I read a message from my Aunt Colleen, who has been busy at work in the medical field. Finally, my Aunt Shelley recorded her message using the "submit audio" feature on the KHAK app and we played it for her live. You can hear all three of the letters and my grandma's reaction below.

By the way, here's the photo of my grandma laying down in a fake Halloween graveyard...

A couple of years ago, I also wrote a letter to my mom and surprised her with it on the air. I can't listen to it because it makes me too emotional, but you can hear it right here:

Happy Mother's Day to my mom, my aunts, my grandma, and all of the other AMAZING moms out there! We hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day on Sunday!
