It was on June 30, 2021, that a fire caused approximately $500,000 in damage at the Coralville Perkins after it had closed for the night. The accidental fire was extinguished by firefighters with the Coralville Fire Department in about 30 minutes.

Since the fire, the restaurant at 819 1st Avenue in Coralville, next to the entrance to the Coralville Landing, has undergone a full remodel. The final touches are being put on the exterior of the building, pictured below.

Jim Frank, the Chief Operating Officer for Perkins Restaurant and Bakery said in a media release, “We are delighted to present our refreshed building design and added services for our guests to enjoy. We greatly appreciate our customers’ patience, while our team focused on renovating the restaurant with a brighter new look for the Coralville community.”

Perkins Pancake House opened in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1958, offering two dozen types of waffles and pancakes. In 1969, the name was changed to Perkins Cake & Steak when the restaurant began to offer lunch and dinner items.  Perkins Restaurant & Bakery now has nearly 270 locations in 31 states. Minnesota has the most locations, with 48.

The Coralville Perkins first opened in 1974. After 16 months away, it reopens on Monday, October 24. In addition to the Coralville location, there are two stores in Cedar Rapids and one in Waterloo.

One thing you can never do when you go to Perkins is leave without enjoying dessert. It's unthinkable.
