Moments From the CMA Awards I Did NOT Like
The 2024 CMA Awards have come and gone. One of country music's biggest nights was filled with some fantastic performances and historic wins for many of your favorite artists. But no awards show is perfect and I have a bone to pick with a few things that happened at last night's CMAs.
1. Toby Keith Tribute - Or should I say a lack thereof. This was the first CMA Awards show held since Toby Keith passed away in February. Sure, there have been tributes at other award shows and a TV special dedicated to his memory. But that is no excuse for the Country Music Association to break out a few red solo cups and pretend that was O.K. The show did well honoring George Strait and remembering Kris Kristofferson. Toby deserved better.
2. Wait...Who Just Won a CMA? - I never going to complain too much if Chris Stapleton wins an award. The guy is simply one of Country's finest talents. But last night felt like a bit much in the Single of the Year category and Song of the Year. Single of the year is reserved for the biggest song of the year. None were bigger this year than 'A Bar Song' by Shaboozey. Song of the Year goes to the best-written song of the year. Cody Johnson got robbed as 'Dirt Cheap' deserved the trophy. And while I love Brooks and Dunn, tell me how they had a bigger year than a current act like Dan + Shay? CMAs...I'm confused.
3. Morgan WHO?? - Finally, the biggest moment and award of the evening was upon us. Who would take home Entertainer of the Year? Jeff Bridges, The Dude, announced the name I wanted to hear...kind of. Morgan Waylon? The guy finally wins and then has to hear that! But, in a cruel twist of fate, Morgan wasn't even there to restore his proper last name! C'mon man...it's the CMAs!
Overall, the CMA Awards provided some great performances that country fans will be talking about for days. What did you think of the show? Do we really need THREE hosts? Will Morgan Wallen change his last name?
