A New French-Inspired Cocktail Lounge Has Opened in the Corridor
Downtown Iowa City is now home to a unique and intimate new cocktail lounge inspired by Parisian cafes of the early 20th century! According to a press release from the Iowa City Downtown District, Claude officially started welcoming customers at 215 N Linn Street earlier this month.
About Claude
Located on the second floor of the restored 1870s building, Claude is described as “a French lounge shaped around comfort, good company, and slow evenings.” The business’ website reads:
“We wanted to create a place where people can linger and feel at ease, surrounded by candlelight, jazz, and a cozy Parisian atmosphere reminiscent of the early 20th century.”
The 28-seat lounge is owned by Adélaïde Subtil, a French-native who moved to Iowa City with her husband Thomas. The business’ name pays tribute to Adélaïde‘s great-grandfather Claude Beauregard, a skilled French pilot who served during World War I and became a pioneer in the field of aviation.
The interior of Claude is meticulously designed by Adélaïde, who studied art and fashion in Paris. The space features red velvet couches and curtains, custom French furniture, and even a vintage Italian chandelier.
The Menu
Much like the decor and design, the food and beverage menus at Claude were also carefully crafted. The lounge offers a number of small plates, including fresh baguettes with butter, marinated olives, Anchoïade, Saucisson Sec & Cornichons, Radish Carpaccio, cheese plates, and more. The press release says that the beverage program, which is directed by David Basinger, “is equally distinctive,” with craft cocktails, wine, and an exclusive champagne offering.
Hours & Reservations
Claude is now open Tuesday through Sunday from 3 p.m. to midnight, and the lounge’s website says that “evening attire is encouraged.” Walk-ins are welcome for small groups, but reservations are available for parties of six or more. You can contact the business on their website HERE.
The Main Floor
In addition to the cocktail lounge on the second level, the owners of Claude also have plans for the main floor. The press release says “the business plans to open a French antiques and home décor shop on the building’s lower level later this year, further contributing to the neighborhood’s diverse retail offerings.”
