Two I-380 Speed Cameras in Cedar Rapids Will Be Turned Back On
Nothing brightens your day like that piece of mail informing you of a ticket courtesy of a speed camera. Drivers along I-380 in Cedar Rapids will soon have two more cameras to worry about.
City of Cedar Rapids Requested Dozens of Cameras
CBS2 reports that in 2024, a new state law gave the Iowa DOT the power to regulate where traffic cameras were allowed. Only cities with 20,000 or more people were able to issue speeding tickets using the cameras, and those cities had to apply for permission from the DOT. CBS2 reports that the city of Cedar Rapids asked to operate more than a dozen cameras throughout the city. Just four were approved.
- I-380 Northbound at Diagonal Drive
- I-380 Southbound at J Ave.
- Both directions at Williams Blvd. and 16th Ave SW
Where Will The Cameras Be Turned Back On?
The city of Cedar Rapids appealed the decision by the DOT. CBS2 reports that, according to recent city council notes, the DOT has reversed its decision and will allow the cameras. They will be located along I-380 at J Ave. northbound and 1st Ave. southbound.
When Will The New Cameras Be Back On?
CBS2 reports that the city is working out a timeline to restart the cameras issuing tickets for speeding. A warning and a public notice period will take place before actual tickets are dispersed.
According to CBS2, Cedar Rapids Police Chief David Dostal made the appeal citing safety concerns and speed concerns along the S-curves through downtown Cedar Rapids.
