If you drive by Harding Middle School Friday afternoon, you might be concerned to see numerous police cars all over the parking lot.  While they will be there for a purpose, and will be challenging the students, it's all in fun.

Friday marks the 9th Annual Kids Vs. Cops Dodgeball tournament.  The student council puts the tournament together every year as a way to help raise funds for the Cedar Rapids K-9 program.  Over the past 8 years, the event has helped raise over $16,000, which has been used to help purchase, train, and equip the dogs.   Last year alone, over $2000 was raised.

It's a great way for the students to build trust and relationships with the officers. However, some take it very seriously... on both sides of the court. In previous years, only a few teams have been able to outlast the officers. Normally, it's only the upperclassmen. However, a couple years ago, a surprising group of 6th graders rose to the occasion. And last year, there were quite a few students teams who were able to grab wins. No doubt, the officers will be looking for some sweet revenge this year.

If you'd like to come watch the fun, you're highly encouraged to. Tickets will be sold at the door for only $3. We also hear the police dogs will be on site for at least part of the action. The event goes from 1:00-2:45 pm.
