Scooters are becoming very popular here in Cedar Rapids. Last night I saw at least two dozen people cruising the streets and sidewalks in the downtown area. The scooters can be a lot of fun, but if you don't obey the rules they can be very expensive.

Just ask Blake, a young man who lives in downtown Cedar Rapids. He was ticketed last night and fined $195. He showed me a copy of the ticket and I took a quick picture. The violation was for FAILURE TO OBEY A TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE.

I asked Blake what happened and he was very honest with his answer. He told me, "Yeah, I was goofing around. I went through a red light and weaved between a couple of vehicles and the cop didn't think that was very cool."

He said the cop who got him was an undercover officer in an unmarked car. Blake was shocked at the price of the ticket. He said, "I figured I'd get a warning. When he told me it was going to be a $195 fine I couldn't believe it!"

There are currently 70 electric scooters in Cedar Rapids for people to use. It's $1 to unlock the scooter and 15 cents per minute to ride.
Scooters are not permitted to ride on sidewalks in downtown Cedar Rapids.

In closing I'll say this, the scooters are pretty cool and I'm glad we have them in our city. We all just need to be sure we're safe and following the rules.

Blake found out the hard way, and now he has to pay the $195.00 price.

Have a great weekend and stay safe my friends!
