Cedar Rapids Local Grocery Store to Close by Years End

The city of Cedar Rapids has already seen one neighborhood lose a grocery store when Hy-Vee closed its 1st Ave. location earlier this year. Now another Cedar Rapids area is about to lose its source of groceries.

The Corridor Business Journal reports that Save a Lot, the no-frills, low-cost grocery store located on J Street SW will close its doors for good by the end of 2024. The owners of the store, Jim and Robin McVeigh, made the announcement on Monday. The couple opened the Save a Lot location at 1625 J Street SW in 1997, in a building that used to be the home of a Me Too grocery store according to the CBJ.

In a statement, the McVeighs thanked customers for the past 28 years and stated that the couple had decided to "embark on a new chapter." The CBJ reports that while a specific closing date was not announced, the couple said in their statement that the store would be closed by the end of 2024. But unlike the situation that is the still abandoned 1st Ave. Hy-Vee store, something else will be going in when Save a Lot closes.

The CBJ reports that the McVeighs are also landlords of the property and have signed a lease with a new retailer to occupy the building in 2025. The name of the new retailer was not revealed, however, according to yesterday's statement said that "our community will soon welcome a well-known national store that will also offer grocery items." The couple said that it was important to make sure another business opened in the area to "help keep the community moving forward."
