The Cedar Rapids Gazette Will End a 142 Year Tradition
The newspaper industry is a tough one to run in 2025. Many have fallen by the wayside over the past decades, victims of the internet, smartphones, and other forms of technology that have led many to deem the newspaper obsolete. Eastern Iowa has been home to the Cedar Rapids Gazette for over 100 years. During that time, a print version of the newspaper has been available in print every single day. That run is about to come to an end.
The Corridor Business Journal reports that the Cedar Rapids Gazette will soon change its print publication schedule, under which the newspaper will only produce a print version three days a week. Those days will be Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The new schedule will go into effect on Monday, February 17th according to the CBJ.
In an email sent to Gazette subscribers, Gazette president Kelly Homewood stated that publishing a newspaper daily has been a point of pride during the 142-year history of the Gazette. But the cost of producing and delivering the print edition continues to increase, while the number of readers and advertisers has gone down.
The CBJ reports that the Gazette will continue to provide daily news updates through its Green Gazette Daily Edition, and online at TheGazette.com. Further updates will be provided as the transition date of February 17th nears. Readers are encouraged to go to thegazette.com/digitaledition for more information and instructions regarding the change.
