Cedar Rapids Firefighters Injured While Battling Large Housefire
One of the roles of EMTs and paramedics is support. When there is a large fire response, EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is utilized not only for those who may be injured, upon arrival at the scene but also to support fellow firefighters who may be injured while performing their duties.
I remember several calls where we were with the medic unit, for some time, until the fire scene was cleared. Luckily, only once did we treat anyone and it was a minor hand injury that didn't require more than a 4x4 gauze and a good tape job.
First responders know that a huge amount of risk is involved with the job and unfortunately, some local firefighters were injured this past weekend while battling a large housefire. My hope is the Cedar Rapids firefighters make a quick recovery.
What was found upon arrival?
On Saturday July 27, 2024, Cedar Rapids Firefighters responded to a residential fire in the 2900 block of Center Point Rd NE. The alarm was raised at 9:14 p.m. for a two-story home engulfed in flames. Upon arrival, crews observed smoke billowing from multiple windows, with significant visibility issues on the house's upper floors.
Firefighters initiated both interior and exterior firefighting strategies after confirming that no occupants were present inside the home. Despite their prompt action, the intense conditions resulted in several firefighters sustaining minor injuries, including burns. They were promptly transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, all injured firefighters were reported to be responsive and were able to communicate with their families immediately after receiving medical care.
What was the cause of the fire?
The fire was declared "under control" at 9:55 p.m., thanks to the dedicated efforts of the firefighting teams and in addition to the fire department, Cedar Rapids Police and Area Ambulance provided critical support on the scene, ensuring a coordinated response to the emergency.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation as authorities work to determine how the incident began. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department indicated that the community will be kept informed as more details become available.
