BAE Systems in Cedar Rapids To Help Military Through $247 Million Contract
BAE Systems in Cedar Rapids is in the process of building a 200,000 square foot facility on Cedar Rapids southwest side, and the company has already secured a $247 million contract for work to be done in that new building.
Wednesday morning, BAE Systems announced they've gotten the contract to design and manufacture a GPS receiver for the military, as well as a next-generation semiconductor. BAE Systems says the work will be done at the new Cedar Rapids facility that's currently in progress.
According to BAE Systems, the contract is from the U.S. Space Force's Space and Missile Systems Center and is for technology that "will provide positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities to warfighters so they can execute missions in challenging electromagnetic environments."
In January of 2020, BAE Systems announced they were purchasing the military Global Positioning System portion of Collins Aerospace. The cost was $1.925 billion.
The $139 million BAE Systems facility is being built at the corner of 76th Avenue and 6th St. S.W. Completion is expected later this year. Below are artist renderings of the project. It's expected to keep approximately 650 jobs in Cedar Rapids.
BAE Systems has more than four decades of experience in military GPS and has over 1.5 million GPS devices around the globe. The company is British-based.
