
This Rare Crime Stat Just Happened in Cedar Rapids
The Cedar Rapids police department released crime statistics for the first month of 2026. Those statistics revealed something that hadn't happened in the city in nearly 10 years.
Crime Statistics for January 2026 Released
KCRG reports that the Cedar Rapids police released crime statistics for January of 2026 on Monday. The new report compares January 2026 to January 2025 while providing five-year averages for major crimes. One of the crimes that has been decreasing in recent months is reports of shots being fired. KCRG reports that for the first time since 2016, shots-fired incidents in Cedar Rapids hit zero.
Auto Theft and Assault Rates Decrease
KCRG reports that data also showed that vehicle thefts decreased from 25 last January to 19 this year. Aggravated assaults fell from 30 in 2025 to 17 this year. Compared to the five-year average, vehicle thefts are down 38%, and aggravated assaults are down 35%.
Cedar Rapids police say that burglaries have increased this year, with 24 reported during January. KCRG reports that is an increase of 20% from last year, but down 37% from the five-year average.
