OK, I'm going to start off by saying that I'm jealous. Jealous of anyone that can glide with relative ease across any frozen surface. Perhaps if I'd picked up the sport earlier in life my legs and ankles would be more cooperative. Need proof I can't skate? Check out this video from just a few years ago. For those of you that can navigate the ice, you'll be happy to hear that the city of Cedar Rapids is in the process of creating two outdoor skating rinks. CBS2 reports that separate rinks are being built at Hughes Park and the Noelridge Park tennis courts. The city even shared a video of the process.

With the bitter cold temperatures in our forecast, it shouldn't take long for things to freeze quickly! Of course, no one wants to skate in a blizzard so you might want to wait until next week to try your luck. CBS2 reports that the city will provide updates on when the two new ice rinks are ready for skating!

Coldest Morning in Cedar Rapids History

On January 31, 2019, the mercury in Cedar Rapids hit -30. That's the actual temperature that morning, which set the new record for the coldest temperature in Cedar Rapids history, with records dating back to 1893. The previous all-time record low temperatures for the city was -29 on January 15, 2009.
