The old saying, "Accidents happen," doesn't apply to every situation. Not when simply paying attention to what you're doing will most likely prevent that accident from happening. Police in Cedar Rapids are warning drivers about construction zones on I-380 after several wrecks on Tuesday. Police say things could have turned out much worse.

Multiple Wrecks on I-380

CBS2 reports that several accidents on I-380 near the airport exit involved multiple vehicles and were more than likely caused by drivers not paying close enough attention in construction zones. Police say the crashes happened around lunchtime near 76th Ave SW and involved nine vehicles.

Construction Work Requires Drivers' Full Attention

If you drive I-380, you know that there are several construction zones that feature narrow lanes and reduced speeds. CBS2 reports that Cedar Rapids Police say that drivers need to slow down and give the road their full attention in these areas. In a post on social media, police officials reminded drivers that "getting there alive is more important than getting there fast."

CBS2 reports that police also remind drivers to put down their phones and avoid distractions while driving. Police warn that yesterday's accidents could have had a more serious outcome.
