One of the best parts about my vacation to the Black Hills of South Dakota was experiencing the wildlife. We stayed in Custer and Custer National Park. The area is 71,000 acres and full of deer, buffalo and more prairie dogs than you could shake a stick at! The kids were so excited to see some buffalo, but the hot temperatures caused them to stay near shade and out of sight. But on our way to see Mount Rushmore, we finally found the buffalo. In the middle of the road!

Several buffalo, including young calves, were just calmly walking down the middle of the road, oblivious to the fact we were trying to get somewhere. And just when we thought that they couldn't get any closer....they did.

Yep. That's a buffalo in front of our van. We stopped and watched as the group slowly moved right by our van. This one even rubbed up against our side mirror! Chase was sitting up front with me and got a pretty cool video.

We were so thrilled to finally see buffalo and to get to witness them up close was an experience we'll never forget!
