If 5th Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids is part of your daily commute, get ready for the change over from a one-way street to a two-way roadway. The city announced plans to accelerate the transition of 5th Avenue with work beginning this week.

The project which gets underway Wednesday will include new pavement markings and new left turn lanes will be added at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 10th Street SE. Other changes include converting the following intersections from four-way stops to two-way stops.

  • 5th Ave and 6th Street
  • 5th Ave and 7th Street
  • 5th Ave and 8th Street

City officials say the change with make 5th Avenue SE a two-way from 5th Street all the way to 19th St. The changes should help the traffic flow on 5th Avenue leaving the downtown area as well as help truck traffic on 7th and 8th street. Work on the project is scheduled to be finished by July 21st. Delays and closures on the roadway can be expected during the project.
