A Popular Corridor Food Cart Now Has Its Own Restaurant
Another delicious Iowa City food cart has moved into a permanent location! According to a recent article from The Gazette, George's Best Gyros now has a storefront in the Ped Mall.
During a night out in Iowa City, two of the most popular spots to stop for a late-night snack are Marco's Grilled Cheese and George's Best Gyros. Back in late 2019, Marco's Grilled Cheese got its very own restaurant at 117 N. Linn Street, and now George's Best Gyros has followed suit! The iconic blue and white food cart has moved into the former Dumpling Darling at 213 Iowa Ave in between El Rays Live & Dive and Players Sports Bar.
George's Best Gyros officially opened their new location on April 1st after serving the Ped Mall as a food cart since 1984. The article from The Gazette reads:
"After 38 years in business, nothing, save for the location and size of the food cart, has changed. Meat still is cut fresh off the cone before being finished on a flat top and folded into warm pita bread with tzatziki sauce, tomatoes and onions. The meat isn’t too greasy, but the signature of a good gyro includes just the right amount of grease."
The menu at George's new location is still pretty simple. Gyros are $9, hot dogs are $6, fries are $4, and chips are $2. It's a small place, with only a couple of seats inside the restaurant, but it is open late on the weekends for all the college kids that are out and about! The hours listed on the official Facebook page are Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
