If I remember correctly there was Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, Donner and Blitzen and we all know Rudolph.  They are all the reindeer but we're only concerned with one of them.  That is Comet.  But not the reindeer comet, the comet, comet.  The big rock-looking thing from outer space.   If you were to see Comet the reindeer flying around, hey great, it's most likely Christmas time.  If you see the other comet, that close, well, it's been nice knowing you.

You Can See them Tonight

Hopefully, you'll get to see a comet and a couple of planets with your naked eyes tonight.  You won't need a telescope but binoculars might be helpful if there are light clouds.  Just undress your eyes and have a look.  The comet you could see has a catchy name, I'm sure it'll be on the tip of your tongue Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS).  It has a ring to it, right? Ok, maybe not but you can still see it tonight.

If you're looking for the comet, the best viewing time in and around Cedar Rapids according to theSkyLive.com is right after dusk.

What Else Can You See in Tonight's Sky?

The comet is not the only thing you can see with the naked eye in tonight's sky.  At approximately 18:40 hrs, 19 minutes after sunset Mercury will be visible.  Shortly after that, if you don't mind waiting around another planet will come into view.  At 19:49 hrs, 1 hr and 28 minutes after sunset you will be able to see Venus. Using the links will help to guide you where you'll need to look in the sky for the best view.

If you have a small telescope there are other asteroids and comets you can view in tonight's sky.  The Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) may be visible on other nights through the end of October.

The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the Troy Trojans, 38 to 21, on September 14, 2024. I took these pictures with my first press pass, thanks to U of I. After reviewing over 3,000 pictures I think these are decent enough to share. I hope you enjoy them.
