Are you sitting down while reading this? You better stand up! A new survey is recommending office workers stand at least 2 hours a day, a warning against the dangers of prolonged sitting. They recommend 2 hours of standing or light activity, and eventually going up to 4 hours a day. What dangers are they talking about? According to research, people who sit have more the twice the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, a 13% increased risk of getting cancer and a 17% better chance of premature death compared to those who sit the least. So what can be done?

If you're like me and sit for most of your work day, get up! Stand up at your desk for periods of time. Walk around the office. Employers also need to be aware of the risks. Meetings can be held standing, or walking around. Start off slow and work your way up to at least 2 hours standing a day. It's a problem we can't take 'sitting down!'
