A 22-year old Davenport woman has been charged with trying to flush a baby she had just given birth to, believing it was stillborn.

A criminal complaint in Johnson County says that Ashley Hautzenrader, of Davenport, delivered a baby in the toilet of a bathroom at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City at around 9:24 Sunday night. She says she didn't know she was pregnant and when the baby didn't cry, she believed it was dead. When she was unable to flush it, she put it in a pillowcase and placed it in a trash can. According to WHO-TV, she then left, after cleaning the bathroom.

Employees of the hospital found the baby, alive, and apparently unhurt.

Hautzenrader has reportedly admitted to putting the baby in the trash. She's being held in the Johnson County Jail in Iowa City, facing a charge of child endangerment, which is an aggravated misdemeanor.

Online records from a year ago, show paternity and child support were established for a child she had given birth to.

I'm obviously far from an expert, but to women who've given birth more than once: Don't you recognize the signs of pregnancy the second time around?
