Willie Nelson to Appear on Upcoming Cyndi Lauper Country Album

Show business can make for strange bedfellows sometimes, as Willie Nelson and pop singer Cyndi Lauper can attest.

The 82-year-old country legend will make a guest appearance on Lauper's upcoming country album, Detour, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The pop singer, who's best known for hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," "True Colors" and "All Through the Night," previewed the new tracks in Nashville over the Christmas holidays. She calls the project "an homage to when country and R&B were close together."

Detour focuses on classic country songs from the 1950s and 1960s. The album's track listing has not yet been announced, and Lauper has not revealed the title of the song Nelson sings on.

"I tried to be professional, but you know when you’re overwhelmed — when he came in, I almost cried,” Lauper tells EW about meeting Nelson for the first time.

The 62-year-old singer shot to fame in the 1980s, and has experienced a major comeback in recent years, first with 2010's Memphis Blues album — which paid tribute to the blues in the same way that her new album salutes country — and then with the massive success of her Broadway musical, Kinky Boots.

One of the other tracks on Detour is a cover of Dolly Parton's "Hard Candy Christmas," which originally appeared on the soundtrack to the film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

“The first hotel we stayed at in Nashville had a big art piece on the wall, and in the corner it said ‘What Would Dolly Do?’” Lauper explains. “I kept thinking that all the way through. I decided she would definitely do one of her songs.”
