Our nephew, Thomas, was named Homecoming King Thursday night at English Valleys High School in North English, Iowa. In any family, it's a proud moment. However, for Julie and me, it's extra special.

It's always a wonderful moment when someone gets recognized by their peers. That's exactly what being named Homecoming King is, right? It means other people like you and let's be honest, that's what we all want. In Thomas' case, I expect it also means he can make just about anybody laugh. I'd bet on it.

When it comes to Julie and me, being Thomas' aunt and uncle is twice as nice. You see, Thomas is the son of my sister, Terri, and Julie's brother, Gerald. We actually met at their wedding many years ago when we walked down the aisle as a bridesmaid and groomsman. I always jokingly tell people we had so much fun, we decided to do it again. I then follow that up with confirming the fact it's legal. We checked. Call us double in-laws or whatever, but it made for an extra proud moment last night. It was pretty awesome to hear so many people tell Terri and Gerald how much they hoped Thomas would win and what a great kid he is. Pretty cool stuff. Pretty darn good parents.

Thomas told me one of his classmates chanted, "Thomas peaked in high school," afterwards. It was all in good fun, teens joking with one another. I told him, "They can't say that, you're still in high school." I then asked him what he was going to do to top this. His response? "Nothing," followed by a big smile. Personally, I bet he will. Someday, somehow. Congratulations, Thomas, and to your proud parents, too.
