The captured bat

Saturday afternoon was a little too exciting at our house. I got home around mid-afternoon and Julie informed me there was a bat hanging on the neighbor's fence. I know very little about bats, but I know them being out and about during the day is very unusual. It's also very possibly reason for alarm. Julie put in a call to Cedar Rapids Animal Control who shared our concerns and agreed they should probably come take a look.

Later in the afternoon, Animal Control Officer Taylor showed up with a bucket, tennis racket, long-handled grabbers, and thick gloves.  He was ready to go to work.

The Officer looked in the tree next to the neighbor's fence and as he made his way back into the corner of the yard, the bat made its presence known with a shriek. I'm pretty sure we all jumped. Earlier in the afternoon, we had moved some landscaping blocks behind the electrical box in our yard. Somehow that sucker had gotten in there.

It was attack time. Out came the long-handled grabbers and within a matter of seconds the shrieking started again, as the Officer made the capture. The bat was none too pleased with wings extended and continuing to make a racket. In the bucket he went.

Hopefully he's enjoying life somewhere out in the wilderness, far away from our house.

See below this photo for a video that's been making the rounds.
