Family members of a University of Iowa freshman who was beaten after coming home from a night out, say the attack was racially motivated. 19-year-old Marcus Owens had his teeth knocked out and need stitches after the attack on Saturday night.

Owens was walking home from an off-campus bar when he was attacked by three white men. They beat him and called him the n-word. Owens' family believe the attack was a hate crime. Students at the school learned of the attack from a Chicago TV station Tuesday night. They are questioning why the university didn't alert other students about the attack using its Hawk Alert System.

The University of Iowa says it has only learned about the incident after receiving a call from a journalist asking about the attack. The school issued a statement late last night via Twitter.
