Let me start off by saying that I am STILL for the legalization of fireworks in the state of Iowa. It's silly to watch dollars go over the border and not be spent here. Many Iowans already shoot off illegal fireworks, so let's make them legal. There were two NFL players over the 4th of July weekend that were seriously injured after being in fireworks accidents. New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre Paul had an index finger amputated. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson hurt his hand while playing with fireworks and lost TWO fingers. Yes, both of these instances show how dangerous fireworks can be. But I've got a larger problem with this story. It's about the players.

Both of these NFL players makes millions of dollars a year. Jason Pierre Paul is in line for a huge contract extension worth in excess of 60 million dollars. Why would you risk your career and earning potential by holding an explosive in your hand? Both players are expected to play again, but will they ever be the same? Fingers are kind of important in a game where catching the football is the goal. The Giants have actually taken their 60 million dollar contract offer off the table until the can figure out if Paul will ever be the same. I look at the situation as it pertains to me. We set off fireworks that you can't buy in Iowa over the 4th. But did I foolishly hold them in my hand? Did I let my kids play around with them? NO. I acted like an adult who understood their priorities, something neither of these players did.

No doubt people will use these high profile accidents as a rallying cry to keep fireworks illegal. But there isn't a law in the land that can protect us from the true danger in this story. Negligence. Foolish behavior can get you hurt whether you're driving, playing with fireworks or even playing football. Remember when you were a kid and you did something dumb, and your mom or dad said, 'Use your head!' We're supposed to learn from these situations. These two NFL stars are learning a hard lesson in personal responsibility.
